Cancer Genome Technology Unit
To facilitate the generation of enormous amounts of genomic data, the Cancer Genome Technology Unit has been established. Here, we combine and add to the current host of high throughput and highly sensitive genomic technologies within TGen, to build a more powerful infrastructure to increase TGen's visibility in the cancer genome technology arena. We will build upon our relationships with major technology providers such as Agilent, Affymetrix, Applied Biosystems and Illumina to invest in TGen's Cancer Genome Technology Unit and to provide access to new and improved high-throughput technology platforms. New and ongoing collaborations with other TGen divisions such as Genetic Basis of Human Disease and Pharmaceutical Genomics will be prioritized to maximize equipment and expertise, which can be brought to bear on cancer genome related projects.
In addition, TGen has established a robust and high-throughput platform of tissue microarrays for accelerated validation of clinical markers of human disease. As candidate genes are identified and validated by TGen research teams (or in other institutes), new technologies advanced by TGen will enable studies to probe the functional consequences of turning off these gene products. Such studies, conducted in very small sample volumes at a rapid pace, are pivotal to guiding subsequent commitments to optimize where in a biochemical cascade drug intervention would have the greatest benefit.
Current Projects: 1. Studying multiple myeloma to help generate reference data for microarray platforms and software tools
2. Working on cutaneous melanoma to help generate data for microarray platforms and software tools
3. Funded by the NIH, this project is designed to identify early-prediction profiles for colon cancer
4. Other projects include those focused on sample prepping, DNA extraction, tumor enhancement and laser caption
