Neurodegenerative Research Unit
At this moment, the neurodegenerative giants, Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, devastate the lives of nearly 6 million Americans. As is the case with most neurological diseases, these horrible afflictions are incurable, disabling, and often fatal. While many of the available drugs are designed to provide relief from the symptoms, few can impede the progression or reverse the damage that results from neuron loss. In a society where the average life expectancy sits at a remarkable 77 years of age, understanding these degenerative diseases is essential to our way of life.
The Neurodegenerative Research Unit at TGen has enlisted the skills of today’s leading scientists to delve into the genetic mechanisms behind these afflictions. In addition to investigating Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease, the institute’s research encompasses the study of multiple sclerosis and Lou Gehrig’s disease, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS).
