Utilizing state-of-the-art microarray and computational resources, we are delineating the molecular factors underlying weight gain, and susceptibility to obesity.

Current projects:
1. Gene expression analysis : In collaboration with expert clinicians and physiologists, we are investigating gene expression profiles in response to weight loss, dietary factors (such as high-fructose corn syrup and artificial sweeteners), and exercise.

The questions we are addressing include:

1) What are the pathways, which are activated or repressed as a result of weight loss?

2) What factors determine who is most likely to lose weight and keep it off?

3) What molecular changes accompany the resolution of co-morbidities of obesity, such as insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and hypertension as a result of bariatric surgery?

2. Other Projects : This Unit also aims to investigate disorders of the gastrointestinal system, particular gastro-esophageal reflux disease, which is strongly heritable, as well as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
